The period from independence to the mercenary revolt of 1960-68 was a turbulent one for Africa. Many newly independent countries were plagued by political instability, ethnic conflict, and economic problems. These factors often led to military intervention, both from within and outside the continent.

One of the most significant military interventions of this period was the Congo Crisis. In 1960, the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained independence from Belgium. However, the new government was quickly overthrown by a military coup led by Colonel Joseph Mobutu. Mobutu's government was then challenged by a rebellion led by Patrice Lumumba, the country's first prime minister. The rebellion was eventually crushed with the help of United Nations peacekeeping forces.

Another major military intervention of this period was the Biafran War. In 1967, the eastern region of Nigeria declared independence as the Republic of Biafra. The Nigerian government responded by launching a military campaign to crush the rebellion. The war lasted for two and a half years and resulted in the deaths of an estimated one million people.

In addition to these major conflicts, there were numerous other military interventions in Africa during this period. These interventions included coups, counter-coups, and civil wars. The use of military force often exacerbated the problems that it was intended to solve, and it contributed to the instability of the continent.

The mercenary revolt of 1960-68 was a particularly dark chapter in the history of military operations in Africa. In 1960, a group of mercenaries led by Bob Denard invaded the Republic of Congo and attempted to overthrow the government of President Mobutu. The mercenaries were eventually defeated, but the revolt highlighted the dangers of foreign intervention in Africa.

The period from independence to the mercenary revolt of 1960-68 was a time of great turmoil for Africa. Military interventions were often used to resolve political crises, but they often only served to worsen the problems that they were intended to solve. The mercenary revolt was a particularly dark chapter in the history of military operations in Africa, and it highlighted the dangers of foreign intervention.

Today, Africa faces many of the same challenges that it did during the period from independence to the mercenary revolt. Political instability, ethnic conflict, and economic problems continue to plague many countries. However, the continent has also made significant progress in recent years. Democratic institutions have been strengthened, and economic growth has improved. These positive developments offer hope for a brighter future for Africa.
