Ulysses Anthony Rhine was an American botanist, parapsychologist, and the founder of the Rhine Research Center. He is considered one of the pioneers of parapsychology and is best known for his work on extrasensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK).
Rhine was born in Shelby, North Carolina, on February 28, 1895. He received his bachelor's degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1916 and his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1917. He then went on to teach botany at Ohio State University and the University of North Carolina.
In the early 1920s, Rhine became interested in parapsychology. He read the work of J.B. Rhine, a pioneer in the field, and was intrigued by the possibility of ESP and PK. In 1927, Rhine founded the Rhine Research Center at Duke University. The center was dedicated to the scientific study of parapsychology.
Rhine and his colleagues conducted a number of experiments on ESP and PK. They found that some people were able to guess the order of cards in a deck more often than chance would allow. They also found that some people were able to influence the outcome of dice rolls and other random events.
Rhine's work was controversial, but it helped to legitimize the field of parapsychology. He was a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Psychical Research. He also served as president of the Parapsychological Association.
Rhine died in Durham, North Carolina, on February 20, 1980. He was 84 years old.
Rhine's Legacy
Rhine's work has had a lasting impact on the field of parapsychology. He is considered one of the pioneers of the field and his research has helped to legitimize the study of ESP and PK.
The Rhine Research Center continues to be a leading center for parapsychological research. The center has conducted a number of important studies on ESP, PK, and other paranormal phenomena.
Rhine's work has also inspired other researchers to study parapsychology. Today, there are a number of universities and research centers that are dedicated to the study of paranormal phenomena.
