Homecoming XVI: A Night of Enchantment, Glamour, and Tradition

On the evening of September 24, 2022, the University of San Diego (USD) campus was transformed into a magical realm for Homecoming XVI. This year's theme, "Enchantment," captured the essence of the event, which celebrated the university's rich history, traditions, and vibrant student community.

A Night of Tradition and Pageantry

The evening's festivities kicked off with the annual Homecoming Parade, which featured floats designed and decorated by each of USD's colleges and student organizations. The parade wound its way through campus, with students, faculty, and community members lining the streets to cheer on the participants.

The parade culminated in the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. This year's winners were Julia Karr and Matthew Smith, who were selected based on their contributions to the USD community and their embodiment of the Homecoming spirit.

A Night of Glamour and Entertainment

After the parade, the festivities moved to the Jenny Craig Pavilion, where guests enjoyed an evening of dinner, dancing, and entertainment. The highlight of the evening was a performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc, who serenaded the crowd with his soulful hits.

In addition to the live music, guests also enjoyed a silent auction, photo booth, and other activities designed to foster a sense of community and celebration.

Julia Karr: Homecoming Queen and Alumna of the Year

Julia Karr, a 2014 USD graduate, was crowned Homecoming Queen and named Alumna of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the university and her community. As a student at USD, Karr was involved in numerous organizations, including the Student Government Association, where she served as president. She also worked as a peer advisor and mentor in the First Year Experience program.

After graduating from USD, Karr went on to earn a master's degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley. She currently works as a policy analyst for the California State Legislature, where she advocates for issues related to education, healthcare, and social justice.

Karr is passionate about giving back to her community and has volunteered her time with organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the San Diego Food Bank. She is also a member of the USD Alumni Board of Directors.

A Night of Unforgettable Memories

Homecoming XVI was a truly unforgettable evening for USD students, faculty, alumni, and friends. It was a night to celebrate the university's traditions, honor its distinguished alumni, and foster a sense of community among all those who have been touched by USD.

As the evening drew to a close, guests left the Jenny Craig Pavilion with hearts filled with pride and memories that will last a lifetime.
