Early Life and Career
Fredric Wertham was born in Munich, Germany, in 1895. He studied medicine at the University of Munich and earned his medical degree in 1919. After completing his residency in psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Wertham emigrated to the United States in 1922.
In the United States, Wertham worked as a psychiatrist at several institutions, including Bellevue Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He also served as a professor of psychiatry at New York University.
Research on Comic Books
In the late 1940s, Wertham began to research the effects of comic books on children. He was particularly concerned about the violence and sexual content in many comic books. Wertham's research was published in a book titled Seduction of the Innocent (1954).
In Seduction of the Innocent, Wertham argued that comic books were harmful to children because they promoted violence, delinquency, and sexual perversion. Wertham's book caused a public outcry and led to congressional hearings on the issue of comic book violence.
As a result of the hearings, the comic book industry adopted the Comics Code Authority, a self-censorship organization that regulated the content of comic books. The Comics Code Authority is still in operation today.
Other Work
In addition to his work on comic books, Wertham also wrote about the effects of other forms of mass culture, such as television and movies. He argued that these forms of entertainment could also be harmful to children if they promoted violence or other negative values.
Wertham's work on mass culture was highly controversial, but it also had a profound impact on American society. His research helped to raise awareness of the potential dangers of mass culture and led to changes in the way that entertainment was produced and consumed.
Legacy
Fredric Wertham died in New York City in 1981. He is remembered as one of the most important critics of mass culture in the 20th century. His work helped to shape the debate about the role of popular culture in society and continues to influence the way that we think about the effects of entertainment on children.
