How to Make a Modern Double Wedding Ring Quilt
Making a Double Wedding Ring quilt is a challenging but rewarding project. The following instructions will guide you through the process of making a modern version of this classic pattern.
Materials
* 1 yard of white cotton fabric for the background * 1/2 yard of a light-colored fabric for the rings * 1/4 yard of a dark-colored fabric for the rings * 1/4 yard of a contrasting fabric for the sashing * 1/4 yard of a contrasting fabric for the binding * Batting * Thread * Sewing machine
Instructions
1. Cut the white cotton fabric into two 18" x 18" squares. These squares will be the center of the quilt. 2. Cut the light-colored fabric into 24 strips that are 1" wide and 18" long. These strips will form the inner rings of the quilt. 3. Cut the dark-colored fabric into 24 strips that are 1" wide and 18" long. These strips will form the outer rings of the quilt. 4. Sew the light-colored strips together end-to-end to form a continuous strip. Then, sew the dark-colored strips together end-to-end to form a continuous strip. 5. Pin the light-colored strip to one of the white squares, aligning the edges. Sew the strip to the square, using a 1/4" seam allowance. 6. Pin the dark-colored strip to the other white square, aligning the edges. Sew the strip to the square, using a 1/4" seam allowance. 7. Place the two squares together, right sides facing. Pin the squares together, and then sew around the edges, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave a 4" opening for turning. 8. Turn the quilt right side out through the opening. Press the quilt flat. 9. Topstitch around the edges of the quilt, close to the seam line. 10. Cut the sashing fabric into 2" wide strips. Sew the strips together end-to-end to form a continuous strip. 11. Pin the sashing strip to one side of the quilt, aligning the edges. Sew the strip to the quilt, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat this process for the other three sides of the quilt. 12. Cut the binding fabric into 2 1/2" wide strips. Sew the strips together end-to-end to form a continuous strip. 13. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, and press it. 14. Pin the binding strip to the edge of the quilt, aligning the raw edges. Sew the binding strip to the quilt, using a 1/4" seam allowance. 15. Fold the binding strip over the raw edges of the quilt, and stitch it down by hand.
